Ruto to Announce Major Policy Directives in Education Entry Requirements
President William Ruto is set to announce significant policy changes in the education sector on Friday, affecting the entry requirements for universities and colleges for the 2022 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates.
The President will receive the report from the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER), which has been highly anticipated. Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, stated that the report is complete and ready to be presented to the Head of State this week.
Machogu revealed that the report includes all the views expressed by stakeholders who gave presentations before the PWPER team.
He also acknowledged that some stakeholders had concerns about the curriculum being too heavy, with 12 subjects currently being compulsory.
“The answer to that is coming on Friday when the President will make his pronouncement in conformity to what has been recommended by the working party.”
However, Machogu did not provide any further details on the report’s recommendations.
Machogu made the announcement while attending the 7th graduation of the Kenya Education Management Institute at Jamhuri High School, where he was the chief guest.
The PWPER, chaired by Professor Raphael Munavu, was granted an extension until June 9th to complete its work. Once the report is submitted on Friday, the team is expected to conduct a national validation exercise.
Machogu also hinted at a new policy pronouncement on the funding of public universities, stating that the working party recommended that students in public universities pay tuition fees based on the institution they attend.
This new model will be implemented after the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service places the 2022 candidates. Students will be required to select universities based on the disclosure of the cost of their programs by the universities they choose.
