President William Ruto announced on April 24, 2023, that he would donate 30 acres of land to the World Health Organization (WHO) to construct a regional health emergency hub and training centre in Nairobi.

Speaking during the launch of a CyberKnife at the Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, Ruto said the emergency hub would be the first of its kind in Africa. He said that the donation of the land was a significant gesture that would benefit the government in many ways, including the creation of job opportunities.

Ruto also promised to help the Kenyatta University complete the stalled children’s hospital and pediatric cancer wing. Health CS Susan Nakhumicha had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with WHO country representative Abdourahmane Diallo earlier that day.

The MOU provides the framework for collaboration between Kenya and WHO in health, training, and rescue efforts during disasters and other emergencies. The WHO Regional Emergency Hub for Eastern and Southern Africa will be established in Nairobi, according to the MOU.

The hub will improve emergency response not only in Kenya but also in the region, according to the Ministry of Health. The ministry also stated that the hub would enhance the country’s ability to coordinate with other countries in the region and improve the collective response to emergencies through partnerships with regional bodies such as the African Union and the East African Community.

Ruto said the government’s collaboration with WHO would bring many benefits, including capacity building and technology transfer. He noted that the 30-acre donation of land would not affect the future expansion of the university or the hospital.

“I note that this provision leaves adequate land available for the future expansion of the university and this hospital,” Ruto announced.

The donation is a significant contribution to the WHO’s efforts to create regional health emergency hubs worldwide. These hubs would serve as regional centres of excellence for responding to health emergencies, training health workers, and conducting research.
