Ruto Directs Banditry-Affected Schools To Reopen Next Month

President William Ruto has ordered that all Baringo schools suspended due to banditry threats reopen by January 2023.

Ruto stated that children who are not in school are denied their entitlement to an education.

Ruto stated on Thursday at the annual Kimalel Goat Auction and Cultural Fair in Baringo that when children drop out of school, Kenya will lose an entire generation.

“County commissioner and your team including regional commissioner, assistant county commissioner, chiefs, assistant chiefs and Nyumba Kumi, in January we want all those schools opened and children to go back to class,” he said.

Ruto stated that bandit attacks in Baringo had been a significant issue.

He stated that everyone in Baringo must live freely for the country to progress economically.

“We are all united in making sure that we have a peaceful Baringo and a peaceful Kenya. Because of that, we have five schools in Baringo South that have since been closed, and another three in Baringo North,” he said.

“The country will lose a whole generation of young people if schools are closed because of insecurity. It is the worst crime we can commit against our children.”

After the holidays, he instructed the regional officer to camp outside the schools to ensure that every child attends school.

Ruto warned county leaders to avoid politics and concentrate on boosting regional security.

He stated that politicians should collaborate with security services to guarantee security in the region.

Cattle rustling has been a source of instability in Baringo as of late.
