Ruto Asked to Restrict Universities’ Certificate and Diploma Programs
In order to facilitate transition, the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms wants a curriculum alignment between universities and the CBC.
Moreover, the party intends to restrict universities’ ability to offer Certificate and Diploma programs.
If the party’s recommendations are authorized and implemented, the recruitment of university chancellors and their deputies will shift from the Public Service Commission to the universities’ councils, where the President will appoint them through the Education Cabinet Secretary.
They proposed that the election of student council leaders be conducted every two years in universities, and that the appointment of deans of schools and faculties in universities be done competitively.
The Working Party believes that such a move would bring about significant changes in the education system of Kenya.
They argue that by limiting the availability of these programs, the focus can be shifted towards higher-level education and specialization, fostering a more skilled workforce.
The proposed restrictions aim to encourage universities to prioritize degree programs and enhance their quality.
By reducing the number of Certificate and Diploma offerings, the Working Party expects universities to allocate more resources and attention to degree courses, ensuring a higher standard of education.
“The government will look at the issues raised holistically and ensure that the CBC works,” Ruto pledged while constituting the team.
