Ruto Allocates Sh237 Million for Education Reform Task Force, Extends Working Terms to June
President William Ruto has granted a three-month extension to the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms. According to a gazette notice published on April 12, the team led by Raphael Munavu will continue with their terms of reference until June 12, 2023.
The team had originally been scheduled to complete its work at the end of March. The budget for the six-month project is set at Sh237 million and was allocated under the state Department of Basic Education. The allocation came under scrutiny from MPs, who raised questions about how the team was spending the funds.
The team’s main focus is on recommendations for the basic education sector, with particular attention to the competency-based curriculum (CBC). It will assess the implementation of CBC, including value-based education, community service learning, parental engagement, and quality assurance.
The team will also examine teacher training, deployment, technology for curriculum delivery, learning outcomes, and public school categorization policies.
The higher education subsector will also undergo reforms, including legislation review for technical and vocational training and universities. The Munavu team will submit recommendations on these and other issues by June 12, 2023.
The extension will allow the team to complete a thorough review of the education sector and develop recommendations that will address the challenges facing the sector.
The decision to extend the team’s tenure is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to reforming the education sector and ensuring that students receive quality education.
