Free Russian Course Applications Closed Within Hours as Kenyan Interest Skyrockets
Interest in learning the Russian language among Kenyans has seen a notable surge, particularly following a significant influx of applications from Kenyan students to St. Petersburg University, a state-owned institution of higher learning in Russia.
Announced in partnership with the Russian Embassy, the opening of the third intake for the course was declared on Monday, February 12, at 2:53 pm, directing potential applicants to complete an online form for consideration.

The Embassy expressed, at the time, that St. Petersburg University and the Russian Embassy in Kenya were pleased to declare registration for the third intake of free Russian language online courses for Kenyans, emphasizing a first-come, first-served basis.
Subsequently, due to an unprecedented level of interest, the Embassy found it necessary to close the applications a few hours after the commencement.
Closure of the intake was confirmed in a subsequent announcement at 9:54 pm, citing the overwhelming number of applicants and expressing gratitude for the interest and support received.
The program was initiated in March the previous year, with applications invited for its inaugural intake, followed by a second intake in September 2023.

Over the past few years, Kenyans have demonstrated an increasing interest in Russian culture, particularly as President William Ruto endeavors to secure employment opportunities abroad for citizens.
As reported in our flagship newsletter, the Evening Brief, the government had arranged for over 300,000 jobs for Kenyans in countries such as Germany, Israel, Serbia, and Russia, with Russia offering specifically 10,000 positions.
Latest travel statistics indicate an annual migration of approximately 20,000 Kenyans to Russia, a figure expected to rise as bilateral relations between the two nations continue to strengthen.
Saint Petersburg University, founded in 1724 in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, is a public institution of higher learning specializing in science, engineering, and humanities research.
