Retired Teachers Petition National Assembly for Delayed Pension Payments
Retired teachers have submitted a petition to the National Assembly, urging an inquiry into the reasons behind the delays in disbursing their retirement benefits.
Mwatate MP Peter Mbogho Shake presented the petition on their behalf, revealing that some retired teachers have not received their retirement dues and pension.
The petition highlighted the plight of retired teachers in Mwatate, stating that they have not received communication from their employer, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), and are yet to be paid their monthly pension and lump sum for their years of service.

Expressing their frustration, the teachers emphasized that the prolonged non-payment of retirement benefits and pensions has left them living in deplorable conditions. They pointed out instances where their counterparts, who retired simultaneously, have received their payments.
In their plea to the National Assembly, the retired teachers requested an investigation into the reasons behind the delayed payments not only in Mwatate but across the entire country.
They also urged Members of Parliament to engage with the TSC to gather data and statistics on all unpaid retired teachers nationwide, including information on when they can expect to receive their dues.

The government, in accordance with Article 43(1)(e) of the Constitution, provides retirement benefits to public officers as part of their terms of service, aiming to ensure social security in their old age.
The Pension Act (Cap.189) outlines the provisions for the payment of pensions, gratuities, and allowances for public service officers.
These retirement benefits serve the purpose of facilitating a smooth transition for public officers from active service, with employment income, to retirement, where they can rely on a certain level of replacement income.
This measure is designed to prevent a drastic change in the standard of living for public officers during their old age.
