Reinstatement Corporal Punishment In Schools – Magoha
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has called for the reinstatement of corporal punishment in schools.
The CS advocated for the reintroduction of the cane to instill discipline, stating that children should not be given too much freedom.
He urged parents to discipline their children rather than rely on teachers to do so.
“We shall not handle children with kid gloves. It is not time for children to dictate what is supposed to be done. “ Said Magoha.
Corporal punishment was outlawed in 2001, and the Children’s Act was enacted to protect children from abuse and violence.
He said this should be reintroduced as soon as possible.
"It is possible to discipline our children and be assertive to them to remain children.” he said.
Prof Magoha, who presided over the launch of the re-engineered National Education Management Information System (Nemis) at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development, urged stakeholders to begin a national conversation about parenting and school discipline.
"We cannot give children what they want. They must be directed to live a normal life, "stated the CS.
Prof. Magoha made the remarks during the aftermath of an inferno that ravaged Kisumu Boys High School.
While speaking to the press, the CS stated that parents would be responsible for the cost of the damage caused by the fire, which occurred two days after schools reopened for the second term.

Professor Magoha warned the students involved in the incident not to disrupt the school calendar and promised that the institution would not be closed.
In the midst of a wave of school fires, the CS came under fire for advocating for corporal punishment.
"We’ve had our heads in the sand for far too long, especially when it comes to parenting.”
“Talk to school principals if you want to know what our parenting challenges are,” he said.
