Punishment Gone Wrong: Grade 5 Student Dies in Trans Nzoia School

A village in Kwanza Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, is in mourning after the death of a Grade Five pupil in unclear circumstances.

The 12-year-old boy, Mike Mulongo, allegedly died after being forced to run around his school’s playground 13 times as a punishment for “misbehaving”.

According to reports, the boy started vomiting blood and fainted after the punishment, and the teacher instructed a security guard to take him home.

The boy’s parents were not at home when he was brought in critical condition, and a neighbor rushed him to Kitale County Hospital, where he died at around 11 pm on Friday, March 10.

The news of the boy’s death has stirred emotions among the villagers, and many are protesting how the school handled the matter.

The locals closed the school’s main gate, demanding justice for the deceased. Catherine Mulongo, the mother of the deceased, described her son as a well-mannered boy and questioned what could have warranted him to be punished to death.

The Kwanza Sub-County Education Director, Richard Makokha, has confirmed the incident and promised a thorough investigation into the matter, leaving no stone unturned. ’

The tragedy highlights the need for schools and teachers to exercise restraint when administering discipline to students. Punishments should be appropriate and not pose any harm to the student’s health or well-being.

The incident is a reminder that the safety and welfare of students must always come first in any educational institution.
