Private Schools Asked To Meet Junior Secondary School Standards

Prof. George Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, has instructed private schools that in order to admit pupils, they must adhere to the criteria established for junior secondary schools.

Magoha stated that one of the fundamental requirements is a well-equipped laboratory. He stated, “If you don’t have a lab, you have no business offering junior high school.”

According to the Cabinet Secretary, most schools in Nairobi and Mombasa have already met the standards, and the government aims to fill 20,000 vacancies in private schools with between 2,000 and 3,000 students.

“You know that in Kenya now, the middle class is large enough so we need private schools to provide enough spaces to accommodate our children,” he noted.

After launching Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC) classrooms at Mukumu Girls and Kakamega High, Magoha reported in Kakamega that 9600 of the 10,000 CBC classrooms contracted had been finished.

He observed that most of the remaining 400 classrooms would be completed in two days, as most of them are already at roof level.

The CS stated that private schools that have met the necessary requirements had been added to the Ministry of Education’s website for youngsters who seek to enroll.

In addition, parents can enroll their children in schools not listed on the web by physically visiting them.

Magoha also cautioned parents who seek to enroll their children in private schools that they will still be required to pay tuition.

The Cabinet Secretary stated that Kakamega and Bungoma counties are vital to the Ministry of Education due to their high child populations.

He praised the collaboration between the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the Ministry of Education in completing the classrooms on schedule.
