Education officials have stated that at least 99 percent of primary schools in Laikipia West Sub County have met the requirements for hosting junior secondary schools.

According to the director of education for Nyahururu Sub-County, Samson M’burugu, at least 99 percent of both public and private schools have been evaluated and approved prior to the implementation of junior secondary next week.

According to him, 52 public elementary schools and 11 private schools have been permitted to house the first students in grade 7.

In addition, he mentioned that twelve other private schools in the region had been approved as feeder schools.

According to him, feeder schools are schools with less than 50 students located within a 2.2-kilometer radius of the main schools.

“We have been inspecting the schools and a majority of those that have met the guideline and the required standards have been given a nod,” said Mburugu.

He stated that the accredited institution possessed the necessary science laboratories and other facilities.

While reassuring parents that the government was prepared for the rollout, he mentioned that education officials have worked tirelessly to achieve a 100 percent transition to junior secondary.

The government of Kenya has made efforts to improve the education system by increasing funding for education and building new schools.

The government through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will hire over 30,000 teachers this month.

However, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed. For example, there is a shortage of teachers despite government efforts.

Schools in various parts of the country lack the necessary infrastructure and resources for providing quality education.

Some will have to be merged as per the government directive for having fewer students.

Additionally, there are still wide disparities in the quality of education between different regions, with rural areas often lagging behind urban areas.
