Police Manning KCPE Exams Arrested After Leaving Gun at School

On Wednesday, a police officer assigned to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) center in Kakamega County was arrested for failing to supervise the administration of Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations at the center.

According to a police report submitted at the Musoli Police Station, the incident occurred when Police Constable Collins Etyang refused to continue his duties and left his rifle unattended.

According to the police report, center manager Tom Ambale was present and pleaded with Etyang to pick up his firearm because it constituted a threat to the community and students taking national examinations.

Ambale reported the incident and Etyang’s behavior to the Musoli Police Station.

As per the police report, the incident prompted a report to the police, leading to a swift response from the sub-county examination surveillance team, which quickly headed to the school.

Upon arrival, they discovered that the officer was absent, prompting the immediate replacement of another officer. Shortly thereafter, the intoxicated officer returned to the examination center.

This incident is one of several reported instances of officers neglecting their duties to consume alcohol. This exemplifies the alarming mental health challenges confronted by police officers.

According to the latest report by the National Police Service (NPS), at least 12,000 police officers are facing mental health challenges that are directly related to work.

The NPS has established training sessions for senior officers to assist their subordinates in coping with work-related tension in order to address this issue.
