Parents Voice Concerns Over School Admission Requirements by Principals

Parents are expressing apprehensions regarding the requirements imposed by school administrations during the commencement of the school terms and high school admission procedures.

On Thursday, concerned parents raised issues regarding demands, including the mandatory submission of reams of paper in the admission process of most schools.

Parents, who shared their concerns on X (formerly Twitter), reported that schools are requiring reams of paper per student, with some institutions asking for more than one ream per student.

Questions were raised by the parents, emphasizing that the reams of paper requested should be included in the school’s administrative budget.

Esteemed journalist Saddique Shabann criticized the situation, claiming, “Kenyan secondary schools are burdening parents with the compulsory purchase of printing papers.”

Shaban expressed his dismay, noting that the requested reams of paper were given precedence over school fees during the admission process, stating, “It’s the first item to be checked even before school fees payment.”

Furthermore, some parents are lamenting about these demands, alleging that corrupt school officials sell some of these papers to unscrupulous businesspersons for profit.

As per the parents, the reams of paper are sold to businesspeople at Ksh 450, who later sell them at market rates of Ksh 750-800.

Parents are terming these demands as a criminal enterprise and are urging a reconsideration of the school requirements.

However, some individuals have defended the schools’ demands, citing that schools receive government funding late in the year while being expected to operate under normal circumstances.

A statement in support of the schools’ requests noted, “Once you get into the system, you will realize that last year’s capitation to schools was disbursed towards the end of the year.”

This implies that school heads had to find ways to keep schools running for the entire year, covering expenses like kids’ meals and printing exams and tests, added Smith Hempstone.
