In Keyian Ward, Transmara West, Narok County, a multitude of residents vented their frustration at Olereko Mixed Secondary School for its consistent poor performance in the KCSE exams.

The Ministry of Education is now under pressure to address the community’s concerns, as the school managed only a mean grade of 1.5 in the 2023 KCSE results, with the top student scoring a mere D plain.

On a day when the Olereko community temporarily halted its regular activities, the locals, armed with placards, gathered to demand answers and take action to rectify the prolonged academic decline at the school.

They trudged through muddy soil, driven by a singular purpose – to bring about positive change for the future of their children.

The community’s grievances were summed up by Darius Kiserema, a resident, who expressed, “We’re discontent today. We’ve witnessed poor results for a decade, and the community is simply seeking a change from the ministry. We’ve given them a two-week ultimatum.”

During the protests, Benson Mpasa, another resident, reported, “Tumejumuika kwa maandamano…wanafunzi walikuwa 23, mtoto wa kwanza alikuwa na D plain…hiyo ni mean score of 1.5.”

In addition to demanding answers from the Ministry of Education, the irate residents called for a complete overhaul of the school management to improve academic outcomes.

Thomas Thunye highlighted, “This is wanting, and parents are not happy about it. The school is governed by a board, and they have remained silent. Students are never given guidance.”

Joshua Ledama echoed the sentiments, stating, “Kwa ujenzi tuko number one lakini kwa matokeo sisi ndio tumevuta mkia Kenya. Hata technical course hakuna ata mwanafunzi atapata. Pioneers pia walifail hadi wa leo wamefail. Huyu principal amekuwa tangu 2013, how can we have a mean score of 1.5?”

The community held a day-long vigil within the school compound, patiently awaiting communication from education officials regarding the way forward.

Senior Chief Joseph Ole Nangoris expressed gratitude for the peaceful demonstration, assuring the residents that both the District Commissioner and the Ministry of Education had pledged to take action.

As they dispersed to their homes, the residents harbored hope that the Ministry of Education would respond to their demands, rekindling optimism within the community.
