Officials at a school in Gatundu South have complained about the state of the facilities.
Gachoka Primary School, which is next to President Uhuru Kenyatta’s house, is in disrepair and urgently needs a facelift.
A random inspection of the school revealed an abandoned learning institution with huge cracks on the walls and floors and most windows with no panes.
Some classrooms lack necessary doors, and the majority of the desks that students have been using are in disrepair.
The school’s lavatories have been in disrepair, forcing some students to avoid going to the toilets while others risk their lives by using the neglected, collapsing latrines.
According to Moses Thithai, a member of the institution’s management board, the school has never been repaired since its inception over 50 years ago, and current students use the same facilities that their grandparents did.
Thithai expressed concern that students have been performing poorly as a result, with most parents now opting to transfer their children to neighboring schools.
When it rains, children and teachers are forced to wear gumboots because the school’s drainage system prevents them from entering the classrooms.
