Parents and guardians of school-going children have been warned of the potential consequences of keeping their children at home.

The Kisii County Education Board chairman, Professor Henry Onderi, is urging clan elders, chiefs, and security officers to help ensure that all children attend school.

He emphasized the government’s policy of having 100% of primary school students transition to secondary school.

Onderi is concerned that there are still several children who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination last year who have yet to join secondary schools, and he finds this situation unacceptable.

He has given teachers the task of ensuring that the Grade Six candidates who wrote the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) last year transition to Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) to comply with government policy.

According to a recent report by People Daily, a number of Grade Six learners whose schools were not approved by the government to offer JSS education are joining approved schools, leading to overcrowding.

Schools in urban areas, such as Kisii Primary School and Kari DEB School, are seeing an increase in enrolment as students from nearby schools move to institutions that offer JSS education.

The head teachers of Kisii Primary School, James Mitunda, and Kari DEB School, Abed Maseno, both confirmed that there has been a significant increase in enrolment, but they are ready to accommodate the influx of students.

Professor Onderi urged the community to help in this effort to ensure that all children receive the education they are entitled to.

The right to education is a fundamental right, and it is essential that every child has access to quality education to achieve their full potential.
