The Western Regional Secondary School Sports Association (WRSSSA) Term 2 competitions feature around 70 schools.

St. Peters Mumias High School will host the competition, in which schools will compete in under-20 soccer, volleyball, netball, rugby sevens, basketball, and basketball 3-on-3.

Other sports include handball, hockey, swimming, badminton, table tennis, and lawn tennis.

Regional Chair Martin Waswa stated that competition is fierce given that new schools defeated old powerhouses in last week’s county championships.

Mwitoto Boys from Kakamega, Mabunge R.C. Boys from Busia, Bukembe boys from Bungoma, and Ebwali from Vihiga County are some soccer-playing schools that have overcome traditional powerhouses and are worth keeping an eye on.

Waswa asked schools and coaches to stick to the guidelines and only field students under the age of 19 in order to reduce the number of appeals.

“We don’t have time for appeals as you know the time is limited. The rules are very clear; we only want eligible players in the championships.

“A school which presents a non-student will be punished severely,” he noted.

Regional Championships will be held from today, September 1, 2022, through September 3, 2022, in preparation for the National Secondary School Championships, which will be placed in Nakuru from September 8 to September 13, 2022.

After the National Championships, successful schools will compete in the East African Secondary School Games, which will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, between 14 and 24 September 2022.
