More than 250,000 pupils are expected to benefit from the school feeding program in Nairobi, which is commonly known as ‘Dishi na County.’

President Ruto, speaking at the signing of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Kenya Mission in New York, emphasized that the feeding program is a crucial government investment that offers improved planning, particularly in terms of climate change preparedness.

President Ruto’s remarks come just one day after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja denied allegations that the central kitchen failed to send food to schools as scheduled.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Sakaja denied the allegations, claiming that a few individuals had ulterior motives for opposing the feeding programme.

Sakaja stated that resorting to propaganda and using children for political purposes would not be effective. He mentioned that the first phase of schools had been receiving their daily meals punctually.

He also indicated that all headteachers had been informed to sustain their arrangements until the county authorities signaled the commencement of the next phase.

Currently, 80,000 children were benefiting from meals priced at 5 bob during the gradual rollout.

In the meantime, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Governor Sakaja have been trading barbs over the school nutrition program on social media.

The conflict began when Owino criticized ‘Dishi na County’ as a scandal that did not benefit Nairobi pupils.

Babu tweeted, expressing that they would persist in holding individuals accountable for their promises, particularly concerning innocent children, and that they would compel them to act accordingly.

Babu argued that individual institutions, not the governor, should administer the feeding program.

He accused the governor of misusing public funds on a project that he characterized as a prospective white elephant.
