Over 20,000 Primary Schools Approved to Host Junior Secondary
The Ministry of Education in Kenya has conducted a thorough assessment and verification process of more than 20,000 primary schools to determine which will be able to host Grade 7 learners.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu explained that the schools were evaluated based on their enrollment numbers, with those that did not meet the criteria being designated as junior secondary feeder schools.
Feeder schools refer to primary schools that do not have the necessary enrollment or infrastructure to accommodate junior secondary students.
The government has implemented affirmative action measures in certain areas to ensure that all students have the opportunity to transition from senior primary to junior secondary.
In high-density areas and urban informal settlements, primary schools with an enrollment of less than 45 students or those lacking basic facilities will serve as feeder schools to other junior secondary schools within a two-kilometer radius.
This will ensure that students in these areas have access to the education they need.
In geographically expansive, low-density, and insecure areas, the government will also implement affirmative action measures to ensure that all students have the opportunity to transition to junior secondary school.
This includes learners with special needs and disabilities, regardless of their enrollment numbers.
Overall, the Ministry of Education is committed to ensuring that all students have access to quality education and that primary schools are equipped to meet the needs of students as they transition to junior secondary school.
The government will continue to monitor and assess primary schools to ensure that they meet the necessary criteria and that all students have the opportunity to succeed.
