Olive Mugenda: 4 Powerful Jobs Former KU VC Holds That Many Don’t Know

Olive Mugenda, former Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, is one of the country’s most accomplished women, having climbed the success ladder over decades.

She is possibly one of the yardsticks of success, having served on the University Council and sitting on several boards across the country.

Mugenda is the former Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, which has recently been at the center of a controversy pitting its administration against President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Jubilee administration.

The university council fired Mugenda’s successor, Prof. Paul Wainaina, as a result of the bitter land dispute.

Mugenda was appointed Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University in 2006, making her the first woman to lead a public university in the African Great Lakes region, and she held that position until March 20, 2016.

She does, however, hold four powerful positions that many Kenyans are unaware of.

Board Chair KU Hospital

She currently serves as the chairperson of the board of directors of Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral, and Research Hospital (KUTRRH), a leading national referral hospital.

JSC Member

President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated her after she retired from Kenyatta University to serve on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), where she represents members of the public.

Housing Finance Group Board Chair

She was named non-executive chairperson of Housing Finance Group Plc, succeeding Dr. Steve Omenge Mainda, who will retire in 2020.

Eminent Persons for County Review Panel

She is one of nine members appointed by President Uhuru to the panel of Eminent Persons for the County Peer Review Mechanism (CPRM).

The CPRM initiative is a collaborative effort involving over 20 state agencies, constitutional commissions, and independent offices coordinated by the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and Africa Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Kenya Secretariat in collaboration with the Council of Governors (CoG).

Archbishop Emeritus Eliud Wabukhala, Ambassador Rukia Ahmed Subow, and Dr John Kakonge are the other members. Dr. Josephine Kulea, Dr. Wanjiru Kamau, Dr. Hassan Bashir, Pete Ondeng, and Salesa Adano Abudo are among the others.

After receiving her first degree, she began working as a tutorial fellow at Kenyatta University in 1981.
