NYS Recruitment 2025: Govt to Recruit Over 100,000 Youths, Says CS Ruku

Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Geoffrey Ruku has announced that the government plans to recruit more than 100,000 youths into the National Youth Service (NYS).

During an unscheduled visit to the NYS Yatta Field Station in Machakos County, CS Ruku emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at enhancing service delivery and positioning NYS as a critical pillar in Kenya’s national development.

He explained that the visit formed part of a wider evaluation tour to assess NYS internal programs and their alignment with the vision of transforming the institution into a self-sustaining entity capable of absorbing more young people into national service. “Our goal is to make NYS self-reliant while providing more opportunities for the youth,” he said.

CS Ruku stressed that this recruitment drive aligns with the government’s wider plan to commercialize NYS operations and lessen its reliance on public funding. He noted that by making NYS commercially viable, service delivery would be significantly enhanced while creating broader employment opportunities for young people.

The Cabinet Secretary also urged the National Assembly to expedite the passage of amendments to the NYS Bill, which the Ministry will soon present. He pointed out that a solid legal framework is essential for NYS products to become market-ready, fetch better value, and contribute to key government programs financially.

“Once we have a strong legal framework, NYS products will be market-ready, fetch better value, and contribute financially to key government initiatives,” CS Ruku remarked during his address.

NYS Role in Major National Projects

In addition to its internal reforms, NYS is expected to play a significant role in national development projects. CS Ruku revealed that 5,000 NYS personnel will be deployed to support the cleanup of the Nairobi River, working in collaboration with other government agencies.

He further pledged to collaborate closely with the Office of the Attorney General and relevant ministries to ensure the seamless implementation of NYS reforms, indicating that a unified approach would accelerate the transformation process. According to Ruku, President William Ruto remains committed to making NYS a hub for youth empowerment and innovation across the country.

“If all public servants embrace the principles exemplified at Yatta, we will transform public service across the country,” the CS stated, affirming the President’s dedication to the NYS agenda.

CS Ruku praised the Yatta Field Station for its outstanding agricultural initiatives and efficient use of resources. The station has dedicated 300 acres to maize farming this season, with a target of producing over 5,000 bags—an increase from the 3,000 bags harvested last year from 250 acres under rain-fed farming practices.

Additionally, the station has prepared more than 300,000 Hass avocado seedlings ready for the market. Other active projects at Yatta include ventures in fish farming, dairy production, banana cultivation, and beef farming, showcasing a diverse and sustainable approach to agricultural development.
