Nyamira Girls, the Nyanza regional hockey girls champions from Siaya County, had a successful start at the 2023 Kenya Secondary Schools Term One National Games by beating St Charles Lwanga from Coast 5-0.

Laureen Auma and Stephanie Seba scored two goals each, while Marcy Dawo sealed the victory in the opening Group A match. Nyamira Girls’ win puts them at the top of their pool alongside St Joseph Girls Kitale, who won their match against Hillcrest by walkover after Hillcrest arrived late.

In Group B, Tigoi Girls from the Western Region narrowly won 1-0 against AIC Nyayo from Eastern, while Loreto Girls from Central beat Afraha 6-1. The games continued the next day, with Tigoi Girls facing Afraha, Loreto playing AIC Nyayo, and Hillcrest seeking redemption against St Charles Lwanga.

Nyamira Girls, on the other hand, faced off against St Joseph Girls Kitale in the top match of the day. Head coach Dennis Kivai praised his team’s performance, noting the individual brilliance of Akinyi and the ball carriers Laura Adongo and Laureen Auma, who helped control the game.

“I am happy for the win. Individual brilliance from captain Vivian Akinyi and ball carriers Laura Adongo and Laureen Auma helped us control the game. We used short passes to outran Tigoi. We are going to bring back the East African title to Kenya, noted Kivai.

In the boys’ category, defending champions St Anthony’s Boys Kitale defeated Meru School 2-0 in the Group A matches. Maseno School from Nyanza drew 0-0 with Nairobi School. In Group B, Musingu defeated St Charles Lwanga 1-0, and Mangu drew 2-2 with Kapsabet Boys.
