Number of Government-Sponsored Varsity Students Decrease – ReportAccording to an economic survey, the number of university students receiving government funding has been declining since 2019.For example, 153,034 male students were supported in 2019, 152,981 in 2020, and 145,339 in 2021. (2021).At least 101,735 female students were funded in 2019, 100,090( 2020) and 97,825(2021).The total number of students enrolled in public universities, however, was expected to fall from 452,100 to 448,500.“The reduction is partly attributed to delayed registration, transfers to private universities and pandemic interruptions,” the report reads.Enrollment in public university constituent colleges was expected to rise by 40.7 percent between 2019 and 2021.Enrollment at private universities is expected to rise by 20% to 11,600 according to the report.The report states that university funding will be reduced by Sh298 million in fiscal year 2020-21.Universities received Sh42 billion in 2019-20, but only Sh41 billion in 2020-21.This is in relation to student funding, which is being spearheaded by the Universities Funding Board.According to the economic survey, university enrollment has increased.In 2021-22, funding for public universities is expected to increase by 4.6 percent to Sh43.8 billion according reads to the report“Some 323,942 students were funded by government, out of this, 118,759 were female, 177,349 were male in 2019-20.“The number of students funded in 2020-21 fell to 286,580 before rising to 338,533 in 2021-22.The University of Nairobi had the most government-funded students, followed by Kenyatta University."UoN had 32,421, KU had 32,162, JKUAT had 25,340, Moi University had 23809, and Egerton had 18,050."From 2019 to date, Garissa University has received the least funding and enrollment.Only 707 students received funding in 2019 and 2020, with 694 receiving funding in 2021.ALSO READ:Funding for constituent colleges was expected to increase by 5% to Sh2.1 billion in 2020-21, up from Sh2 billion in 2020-21.The number of diploma and certificate students enrolled in private and public universities increased from 55,351 in 2020 to 58,414 in 2021.The overall number of students enrolled in diploma and certificate courses is expected to increase by 5.5% according to the report.However, enrollment in diploma and certificate programs at public universities is expected to fall by 14.3%.During the announcement of the 2021 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha stated that 1,138 (0.14%) candidates received an overall grade A, compared to 893 (0.12%) candidates in 2020.Number of Government-Sponsored Varsity Students Decrease – Report
