Non-Teaching Staff At Garissa TTC Protest 5-Month Salary Arrears.
Non-teaching staff at Garissa TTC protested peacefully on Tuesday, demanding their five-month salary arrears.
The employees stated that if the government can no longer sustain the staff, they should declare them redundant and pay the resulting dues.
According to Mohamed Tawane, a watchman at the institution, they have suffered for far too long and are no longer able to provide for their families.
They claimed that food and basic commodities prices have skyrocketed, and the meagre salary on which they relied is no longer available.
“Majority of us are Muslims and we are fasting. How do those in authority think we are going to feed our families during Ramadhan. We have no other source of income,” he said.
Mason Issa Yussuf stated that they were last paid in January of this year for their October salaries.
“Somebody somewhere must be sleeping on his or her job. I urge those concerned to be humane enough and pay us,” he said.
Yussuf said Education CS George Magoha should intervene. “Our families are suffering.”
Ambia Abdi stated that the salary delay was making it increasingly difficult for them to feed their families.
“We have families who rely on us directly." Schools will reopen soon, but we don’t even have enough money for school fees. "The situation is dire," she stated.
The principal of the institution, Peter Magoci, stated that the workers had not been paid but declined to elaborate.
However, according to an institution source, the ministry has been slow in disbursing funds, resulting in accumulated arrears.

He also stated that the number of students has decreased from more than 400 a few years ago to a meagre 54 as a result of the revised minimum entry requirements for teacher training colleges.
“The number of students is to say the least unsustainable and the college may close its doors if the leaders do not hold a rigorous campaign to woo candidates to join the college,” the source said.
