As the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education enters its second day, parents and teachers have been advised to allow students to spend their vacation without subjecting them to unnecessary tuitions during the seven-week break.
Dr. Julius Jwan, the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, stated that the time allotted for covering the syllabus is adequate, and that no parent or teacher should offer tuition claiming that the time allotted is insufficient to complete the syllabus.
“We encourage parents to allow learners to take a break during this long holiday and nobody should let them to undertake any tuition. The time allocated for syllabus coverage is enough and there is a likelihood that some individuals will take advantage of the fact that we have shortened term dates to bring them back in the name of covering the syllabus,” he stated.
In consultation with stakeholders, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) determines the best time to cover prescribed syllabuses at various levels of education.
According to education experts, this time must be planned for and used effectively in order to complete the teaching and learning tasks. As a result, a school must have a timetable that all teachers must adhere to.
Concerns have been raised about the stress placed on students following riots in secondary schools.
A parliamentary committee formed to investigate the unrest spoke with students who complained about an overburdened curriculum and long school terms.
