National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) payments for high-income earners will be capped at Ksh 5,000.

The proposed 2.75 percent of income for NHIF contributions has been limited at a maximum of Ksh 5,000 and a minimum of Ksh 300, Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha explained on TV47.

She stated that the ministry will also implement a means test for those unable to pay the Ksh300 minimum contribution so that they can be placed on a subsidy program.

Nakhumicha also disclosed that Universal Health Coverage (UHC) failed to function under the previous administration due to the absence of appropriate legislation, and that the government is making significant progress toward achieving UHC with the launch of the program scheduled for October.

During the Mashujaa Day celebrations, President William Ruto is anticipated to flag off the 100,000 community health promoters.

Universal Health Coverage is the theme for Mashujaa Week, and a number of UHC-related events, including exhibitions on health innovation and locally manufactured medical products, are scheduled.

The celebrations of Mashujaa Day on October 20 will be the culmination of the events to be conducted in Kericho beginning on October 13.

She expressed optimism that the proposed Primary Health Care Bill, Digital Health Bill, Facility Improvement Fund Bill, and Social Health Insurance Bill will ensure the success of UHC as part of the reforms being implemented to streamline the health sector.

Currently, the Ministry of Health is engaging stakeholders on the four health bills approved by the Cabinet during a meeting conducted at Kakamega State Lodge.

If Parliament passes the bills, they will create three funds: the Primary Health Care Fund, the Social Health Insurance Fund, and the Emergency, Chronic, and Critical Illness Fund.

A year later, when asked how she would rate herself, she responded, “I would give myself a 6 or 7 out of 10.” I have implemented effective strategies to ensure Kenyans obtain quality healthcare.”
