NEMA Threaten University Closure due to Pollution Concerns
The National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has announced the potential closure of a local university in Kajiado County due to pollution concerns.
The university has been accused of releasing untreated waste into the environment, an issue that has drawn repeated warnings from the authority.
Salome Machua, NEMA’s Deputy Director of Enforcement, addressed the situation on Thursday during a visit to the university.
She reported that the institution might be shut down if it did not resolve the problem of raw waste discharge.
Machua mentioned that the university had previously been alerted to complaints about wastewater leakage but had not taken adequate steps to fix the issue.
The leaked waste has formed hazardous ponds in open areas, posing a danger to local residents.
NEMA emphasized that their visit to the university was a follow-up to complaints received the previous week about effluent discharge from the institution’s treatment plant.
Conditions for compliance had been set, including a review of the treatment plan to stop the environmental release of waste. Due to the university’s non-compliance with these conditions, it now faces the threat of closure.
In addition to the university, NEMA has also warned several slaughterhouses in the area of potential shutdowns because of improper waste disposal practices.
The authority pointed out that the current waste management methods at these abattoirs are unsafe and fall short of required standards.

This crackdown is part of NEMA’s broader initiative to enforce proper waste management practices across various institutions.
Earlier in the year, NEMA targeted 29 companies in the Nairobi metropolitan area for polluting the Nairobi River. These companies were mandated to clean up the river within 30 days of receiving the notice.
