National Secondary Schools Games Begin Tomorrow in Eldoret
The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games are set to commence on April 25th, and will run until April 29th at Hill School and Moi Girls in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
The games will see over 2,000 students participating in six different disciplines including rugby 15s, basketball, netball, hockey, athletics, and swimming. The official opening of the games will be led by the Education Principal Secretary (PS) Belio Kipsang.
The rugby 15s competition will be the main focus of the event, with defending champions Kakamega High School eliminated at the Western Region Term One games.
The new champion will be crowned after stiff competition from teams such as three-time champions Mang’u High from Central, debutants Ofafa Jericho from Nairobi, and All Saints Embu High from Eastern in Pool A. In Pool B, Butula Boys and St. Anthony’s Boys High School from Rift Valley, Kisii High from Nyanza, and Kwale High School from the Coast Region will compete.
In basketball, Pool A will feature Friends School Kamusinga from Western, Thika High from Central, Dagoretti High and Lukenya from Nairobi, while Laiser Hill from Rift Valley, Onjiko High from Nyanza, and Dr. Aggrey High from the Coast will feature in Pool B.
In the boys’ hockey, Pool A has St. Anthony from Rift Valley, Maseno School from Nyanza, Meru School from Eastern, and Nairobi School. In Pool B, Mang’u High School will compete against Kapsabet Boys, St. Charles Lwanga, and Musingu.
“We believe that each participant in this tournament is a winner, we are taking every team as a strong,” Barasa said.
In girls’ hockey, St. Josephs Kitale will square it out with St. Charles Lwanga from the Coast in Pool A, which also features former champions Hillcrest and Nyamira Girls from Nyanza. In Pool B, Afraha will highlight along with Tigoi, Loreto Girls, and AIC Nyayo Girls.
KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi has confirmed that all the teams have arrived, and the grounds are ready for the event. He vowed to ensure that cases of age cheating remain a thing of the past following the introduction of NEMIS, which assigns a unique identification number to each student.
If there are any issues such as age cheating, strict action will be taken against the teacher involved and the school.
The national championship resumes fully for Terms One and Two, after a two-year disruption by the Covid-19 pandemic. Each team will be regarded as strong, and no team will be underestimated. The games promise to be highly competitive, with each team aiming to take home the trophy.
