National Secondary School Games: Day 1 Results
The National Secondary Schools Term One Games began at Hill School, Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County. Teams from the Rift Valley performed well, with Laiser Hill topping Pool B in boys’ basketball after a dominant performance against Sabunley from North Eastern, which ended in a score of 155-19.
Dr. Aggrey High School from the Coast, the defending champions, began their title defense on a high, beating Onjiko from Nyanza 60-53 to finish second on the opening day of the games.
In girls’ basketball, defending champions Kaya Tiwi from the Coast region lead Pool A after an impressive start to their title defense bid. They defeated Hon. DM Amin from North Eastern 122-0, led by Roseline Akinyi, who scored a game-high 37 points. The other match saw Butere from Western defeat Nyanza’s Ototo 67-49.
In Rugby 15s, debutants All Saints from Eastern top Pool A, after beating Central’s Mang’u High School 22-6 at the Eldoret Sports Club. In Pool B, St. Anthony’s Kitale saw off debutants Kisii High School 8-6. In boys’ Hockey, hosts and defending champions St. Anthony, Kitale started their title defense on a winning note, after beating Meru School 2-0 in a Pool A match.
Rugby Development Takes Root in Kenyan Primary Schools
In the other Pool A match, Maseno from Nyanza played to a barren draw against Nairobi School.
In the girls’ category, St. Joseph Kitale and Nyamira Girls are joint leaders in Pool A. St. Joseph defeated former champions Hillcrest from Nairobi 5-0, while Nyamira Girls saw off St. Charles Lwanga by the same margin.
In boys’ handball, Kamito from Rift Valley are leading Pool A, after defeating defending champions Hospital Hill from Nairobi 31-29, in a repeat match of last year’s final held in Nakuru County. Mbooni Boys are second in the group, after seeing off Central’s Handege 26-22.
The competition continues on Wednesday, April 26, with the Cross Country for Junior Men (U20) 8km and Junior Women (U20) 6km, which will take place at Moi Girls in Eldoret.
Robert Aran, Principal of Dr. Aggrey High School, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to retain the title, saying that they have what it takes to defend their title and go all the way to win the East African crown. Benson Mwenda, All Saints Head Coach, said they will focus on one game at a time and not underestimate any team that is in the nationals.
