Initially, the count stood at 18 national schools until 2011, when Sam Ongeri, then Minister of Education, advocated for an additional 30 schools. Subsequently, in 2013, as part of a drive to foster social cohesion and national unity, 30 provincial schools were accorded national status.

This trend continued in 2014, with the inclusion of 25 more institutes, bringing the total count to 103. In 2019, the tally of national secondary schools in Kenya reached 105.
However, with the incorporation of special needs schools into this category in 2020, the figure escalated to 126. Given their exclusive selection criteria, wherein only the highest-performing KCPE candidates gain admission, these institutions consistently rank among the finest in Kenya.
