Soccer: National School Games Results
Madira held the defending champions, Wiyeta Girls, to a 1-1 draw with spirited defense.
Wiyeta fell behind early after Valerie Nekesa scored the opening goal for the Soccer Assassins at the Bukhungu Stadium following a spirited start to the match.
Five minutes before halftime, Edna Wauda scored for Wiyeta to negate the goal by the Kenya Women’s Division One golden boot winner.
The second half was a defensive exercise for Madira as Wiyeta threw bodies forward in quest of the winning goal.
Velda Auma made an outstanding save on a shot from 18 yards by Nekesa, who was attempting to score a second goal against the flow of play.
Francis Muhambe, the Ebwali head coach who took over at Madiras after leading Ebwali to the national championship last season, was pleased with her team’s performance.
“My tactics were effective today, but we were sloppy while attacking and forgot to recover swiftly, which allowed Wiyeta to punish us on the counterattack.
“We are concerned about Nekesa’s injury and will evaluate it before deciding whether she will play tomorrow,” Muhambe said.
Wiyeta head coach Edgar Manyara praised his team’s performance against KWPL-bound Madira but demanded more from her squad.
“Everyone endeavors to defeat the defending champion. Manyara stated, “We must become more ruthless because the competition is fierce.”
Group A’s top team, Butere, earned their first three points by thrashing newcomers Kombani 5-0 to achieve a total of four points.
Lwak defeated Mbitini 4-1, while Dagoretti Mixed defeated Njambini 2-1 at Mukumu Boys grounds.
When Madira Girls encounter Lwak Girls from Nyanza, Valerie Nekesa, a lethal assailant, must be ready in time for the Madira Girls.
The defending champions, Wiyeta, will face an eliminated Mbitini, while the hosts, Butere, will welcome Njambini.
The runner-up from last year, Dagoretti Mixed, will face Kombani.
