National Primary Schools Athletics: Rift Valley Region, Western Emerge Champions
The Primary Schools Athletics Games have come to a close, and it was the Rift Valley region that emerged as the champions with a historic 511 points. The Western region came in second with 315 points, while Nyanza finished in third place with 281 points.
The Central region took fourth place with 130 points, the Coast region finished fifth with 127 points, and the Eastern region came in sixth with 104 points. The Nairobi and North Eastern regions trailed behind with only 23 and 15 points respectively.
One of the standout performances of the games was by Emmanuel Kiprono from Elgeyo Marakwet, who won both the boys’ 5,000-meter and 1,500-meter races. Kiprono impressed spectators with his speed, winning the 5,000-meter race in 15:17.55 ahead of his Rift Valley colleague, Emanuel Kipkurui from Kiletien Primary School in Transmara East Sub-County in Narok County.
Kiprono also won the 1,500-meter race in a time of 4:08.22, followed by his Rift Valley teammate, Daniel Ndiema from Teldet Primary School, who came in second with a time of 4:16.17. Nyanza region’s Kelvin Orangi from Oragare Primary School finished in third place with a time of 4:23.04.
In the girls’ 1,500-meter race, the Rift Valley region took the first and second positions, with Rehema Chekirui from Katet Primary School finishing first with a time of 4:41.85, and Sharon Chepkirui from Kingeru Primary School coming in second with a time of 4:43.75. Esther Chepchumba from Kaboriot Primary School in the Western region finished in third place with a time of 4:58.20.
Samuel Chege from Narok in the Rift Valley region won the boys’ 100-meter race with a time of 11:09 seconds, followed by Albert Oigo from Ekerubo Primary School in the Nyanza region, who clocked 11:96 seconds, and his teammate Brian Ochieng who finished in third place with a time of 12:12.
In the girls’ category, Selfa Ajiambo from Nangina Primary School in the Western region won with a time of 12:78. Mary Sofia from the Rift Valley region finished in second place with a time of 12:94, and Jacklyn Tianina from the Rift Valley region came in third with a time of 13:25.
Ajiambo is using the games as part of her build-up for the upcoming Under-18 Confederation of African Athletics (CCA) in Lusaka, Zambia, which she has already qualified for. Brian Kipruto from Father Toror Primary School in the Rift Valley region took first place in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, followed by Drick Sifuna from Machuele Primary School in the Western region and James Njoroge from Kitale Forest Primary School in the Rift Valley region.
Valentine Nekesa from Kambi Primary School in the Rift Valley region won the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, with Damachims Nyangwara from Rianchaga Primary School in the Nyanza region finishing in second place and Mary Akoth from Karosi Primary School in third place.
In the 800-meter race, Mathias Kasaine from Narok County finished in first place, followed by Levis Korir of Ramogo Primary School in the Rift Valley region and Nyanza’s Daniel Gichane. Governor Patrick Ntutu, who spoke during the closure of
