A female student in her third year at Murang’a University of Science and Technology has reportedly died by suicide in her rented room. The student, identified as Samantha Nyawira Wanjugu, is said to have taken her life in the early hours of Monday, around 1:20am, at her hostel near Total Petrol Station.

The university’s Dean of Students confirmed the news to the student body and staff through a memo on Tuesday, April 18th. The memo expressed deep sadness and announced that Wanjugu was a third-year student pursuing a BSc in Tourism Management in the school of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

The Dean of Students did not disclose the reason for the student’s suicide but stated that burial arrangements were underway, with the date to be announced later. The body of the deceased was transported to the Murang’a Level 5 Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

The news of the student’s suicide has left the university community in shock and mourning. This unfortunate incident highlights the need for mental health support and resources in universities to address issues such as stress, anxiety, and depression, which are often associated with academic pressure and other factors.

It is important for students to seek help and support from trained professionals or counseling services whenever they experience emotional distress or mental health challenges.

Additionally, universities can create a conducive environment for mental well-being by promoting a culture of openness, support, and understanding.
