Mukuuni Boys High School in Tharaka Nithi County was closed indefinitely following a disease outbreak among the students.

County Director of Education Bridget Wambua confirmed the incident, stating that 40 students were hospitalized after displaying symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomachache.

Most of the students were released, but two of them are still admitted at Chuka Nursing Home. Wambua stated that a detailed report from health officials is awaited before any conclusions can be drawn regarding the outbreak.

Wambua mentioned that the school suspects that the water used in the institution was contaminated during road construction works, but this cannot be ascertained until the report from public health officers is available. She also mentioned that arrangements would be made for the students to return and complete their end-of-term examinations.

This outbreak comes weeks after Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls School and Butere Boys High School were also closed due to disease outbreaks.

At Sacred Heart Mukumu Girls School, located in Kakamega County, over 120 students were hospitalized and three of them lost their lives due to bacterial infections, as disclosed by Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha Wafula.

In addition, a teacher at the school also passed away due to organ failure, exhibiting similar symptoms as the students.

The authorities are taking the situation seriously and working with health officials to determine the cause of these disease outbreaks in schools. The safety and well-being of the students are of utmost importance, and measures are being taken to ensure that the schools are safe for the students to return and complete their studies.

The closure of schools due to disease outbreaks is a cause for concern and highlights the need for proper hygiene and sanitation measures to be in place in educational institutions to prevent the spread of diseases among students. The authorities and health officials are closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to address the issue and prevent further outbreaks in schools.

Parents and guardians are advised to keep a close watch on the health of their children and seek medical attention if they display any symptoms of illness. The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education are working together to address the situation and ensure the health and safety of students in schools across the county.

It is important for all stakeholders, including schools, parents, and health officials, to work collaboratively to prevent and manage disease outbreaks in educational institutions and safeguard the well-being of students.

Further updates on the situation will be provided once the detailed report from health officials is available, and appropriate measures will be taken accordingly to prevent similar incidents in the future.
