MP Melly Asks TSC to Reinstate Teachers Sacked for North Eastern Transfer Request

MP Melly Asks TSC to Reinstate Teachers Sacked for North Eastern Transfer Request.

Tinderet Member of Parliament (MP) Julius Melly has criticized the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) for suspending non-local teachers on allegations of abandoning their duties.

The authorities dismissed these teachers because they requested transfers from North-Eastern Kenya due to security concerns.

During the opening of a new tuition block at Meteitei Adventist Primary School in Meteitei, Melly expressed his disapproval of the TSC’s decision, arguing that it was unjust to fire teachers when their fears for security were legitimate.

Melly’s Request Melly is now calling for the immediate reinstatement of the suspended teachers by TSC and their transfer unless the government can guarantee their safety at their workplaces.

Melly questioned the authority of individuals sitting at the TSC headquarters in Nairobi to make decisions about firing teachers without considering their concerns.

“How can someone who is in Nairobi headquarters just issue orders of teachers being fired without listening to their queries?”

The MP affirmed their support for the affected teachers, who have accused the TSC of exceeding its jurisdiction.

These teachers have been staging a protest outside the TSC’s headquarters and have called on Parliament to intervene, contending that the employer is putting the lives of teachers at risk.

“As the chair of the education committee, I even had a teacher say, ‘We pay a police reservist KSh 1,500 so that we can be protected… by road, you can’t travel 1,100 km, and air transport costs KSh 12,000, which we can’t afford.’ These are issues TSC ought to have considered,” he added.

In letters sent to the affected teachers, the TSC under Nancy Macharia cited a violation of the Teachers Service Commission Act. The letters mentioned that the teachers had allegedly abandoned their duties, which led to their suspension.

These teachers have been camping at the TSC Headquarters for several weeks, requesting transfers from the region due to insecurity caused by the threat of Al-Shabaab and hostility from the local community.

They argue that TSC has not adequately addressed the concerns they raised.
