Moi University Launches Digital Campus Platform for Online Studies
The Director of Moi University Institute of Open and Distance E-Learning (IODeL), Masibo Lumala PhD, has emphasized the need for universities to incorporate technology in their teaching methods if they want to produce graduates who can meet the demands of the labor market beyond 2030.
Masibo believes that if people can work remotely, then they should be able to study remotely as well. He notes that the availability of internet-enabled gadgets and web-based channels and applications facilitate remote learning.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on higher education, causing universities to reassess their traditional teaching methods. Masibo argues that embracing technology in education is crucial for the transformation of higher education.
He believes that universities cannot continue to deliver content in the same way they did 15 or 20 years ago and expect their graduates to meet the needs of employers in the future.
Masibo calls on education stakeholders to prioritize digitizing universities and to embrace cloud computing and learning management platforms that are user-friendly and easy to navigate.
He also emphasizes the importance of acquiring the right digital skills. He cites the example of Moi University IODeL, which is taking measures to fully embrace technology and ensure that both students and staff are empowered to enjoy the benefits of a digital campus.
As part of its efforts to embrace a digital campus model, Moi University is engaging partners such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Lenovo, and Vmware Limited.
The university is also collaborating with the Centre for Competence in Digital Education (C-CoDE), thanks to École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), to ensure that it is fully operational and can take full advantage of the well-equipped digital studio.
