Mount Kenya University has signed a work placement agreement with Nairobi-based recruitment agency Bluewave International Services, aiming to connect Kenyan graduates with job opportunities in Germany’s hospitality industry.
Mount Kenya University has signed a work placement agreement with Nairobi-based recruitment agency Bluewave International Services, aiming to connect Kenyan graduates with job opportunities in Germany’s hospitality industry.
The partnership is expected to benefit hundreds of Kenyan graduates, with the first group of 22 already having departed for Germany, following successful interviews.
The graduates targeted were those who had graduated between 2017 and 2022. Jane Kanjuru Kuria, Dean of the MKU School of Hospitality, Travel, and Tourism Management, stated that they were pleased with the outcome of the partnership with Bluewave International Services.
The agreement is a timely solution to the rising unemployment rate in Kenya, which has increased from 2.8% in 2013 to 5.7% in 2021, as reported by the World Bank.
The partnership will help address the issue of limited job openings, allowing graduates to access opportunities in the strained market.
Amos Mbugua, founder and managing director of Bluewave International Services, acknowledged the severity of the unemployment figures and announced that the partnership would extend to nursing and food science graduates and students.
In addition, Mount Kenya University signed a healthcare assistant training programme and apprenticeship pact with Germany’s Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in October 2021.
The partnership aimed to leverage the growing demand for health workers in Germany and offered short-term certificate courses for healthcare assistants through Equip Africa Institute, an affiliate institution of the university.
Germany’s labour market is increasingly experiencing a widespread shortage of qualified labour, with nursing being one of the most affected professions. According to studies, there could be a shortfall of up to 500,000 nurses in Germany by 2030.
The partnership between Mount Kenya University and Bluewave International Services will help bridge the gap, providing Kenyan graduates with employment opportunities and benefiting the German hospitality industry.
