Mount Kenya University (MKU) is expanding its footprint into Uganda after making significant strides in Rwanda.

During its 26th graduation ceremony, MKU Co-Founder Dr. Jane Nyutu outlined the university’s progress, noting that an office had been established in Kampala, and land was acquired in Kibuli, Kampala, for constructing an office block.

The ceremony, themed “Internationalisation of University Education for the Development of a Competitive Global Workforce,” also highlighted the university’s collaborative efforts with Ugandan institutions.

MKU’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Deogratius Jaganyi, elaborated on initiatives such as a recent benchmarking visit where ten leaders of the MKU Students’ Association toured Makerere University and Makerere University Business School.

Additionally, MKU’s Medical Students’ Association hosted three medical students from Uganda’s Busitema University in October as part of an exchange program.

Uganda’s Deputy High Commissioner, Ambassador Eunice Kigenyi, who served as the chief guest, praised MKU’s international expansion.

She highlighted the establishment of the Uganda regional office in Kibuli and another office in Hargeisa, Somaliland, as evidence of MKU’s commitment to spreading across the continent.

She observed that MKU alumni are actively contributing to the global workforce, with some students participating in the USA-based Roadstar Work-Study Project since December 2019.

This strategic push into the Ugandan market follows MKU’s earlier success in Rwanda, where it established a campus in Kigali over a decade ago. The campus transitioned into Mount Kigali University, which now serves approximately 10,000 students representing 25 nationalities.

Mount Kigali University has significantly transformed education in Rwanda. Among its achievements is the establishment of the 42-bed capacity Kigali Paramount Hotel, modeled on Kenya’s Utalii Hotel, to provide practical hospitality training for students in Rwanda and the Great Lakes region.

Additionally, Royal FM, an English-language radio station founded by the university, has become an essential training platform for journalism students.

During the graduation ceremony, 7,448 students received degrees, diplomas, and certificates, marking another milestone in MKU’s mission to produce globally competitive graduates.
