Ministry Warns Headteachers Who Have Refused to Close Schools For Holiday
The Ministry of Education has issued a warning to all principals who have refused to allow their students to take a holiday.
Speaking at a conference organized by the Kenya Private Schools Association (KPSA) in Mombasa, Dr Julius Jwan, Principal Secretary for Early Learning and Basic Education, stressed the importance of students spending time with their parents and guardians.
According to the school calendar, students were supposed to take a 10-day vacation beginning Friday, July 1.
Jwan stated in his speech that it was still illegal for schools to hold back students and offer tuition, stating that it was prohibited by the state.
He also stated that the break was intended to allow the children to unwind after a hectic school year.
“Give parents time to be with their children,” Dr Jwan told the teachers during the annual conference.
According to reports, some of the schools kept their students in class and continued to teach them despite a government directive.
According to the Basic Education Act, holiday tuition is still illegal in both public and private institutions across the country, with violators facing a fine of up to 100,000 shillings or six months in prison, or both.
This comes after Education CS George Magoha warned teachers not to engage in political activities or publicly declare their stance.
He warned the tutors not to disrupt learning by engaging in open political debates or attending political events at the expense of their responsibilities.
“I will not sit and watch as my staff and teachers join what I call stupid partisan politics. It has to stop because children don’t have political parties.

Schools will reopen on Tuesday, July 11 for the second term, before closing again days before the August 9 midterm elections.
