Embu’s education stakeholders have requested that the government consider including financial literacy into Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

The introduction of financial literacy into the curriculum, according to Susan Muthoni Mugera, a retired education officer, will promote financial discipline in students.

“Knowledge wise children should be able to be taught financial literacy as early as grade one, grade six and even junior secondary,” she said.

She stated that children should be taught to invest and save at a young age, adding that the next generation needed early talent discovery in order to learn how to invest and save.

James Njue Machine Nawiri Sacco’s chairman, speaking to the press at Kangaru Girls in Embu County, encouraged the Ministry of Education to introduce financial literacy into CBC.

He emphasized that the incorporation of financial literacy will not only assist the children, but will also benefit Kenya after the children reach adulthood, as they are the next generation.

He stated that it will create a culture of saving in children. “Every nation that desires growth should teach its citizens how to save,” he stated.

The incorporation of financial literacy into CBC, according to Joseph Njeru Mugo, CEO of Nawiri Sacco, would contribute to Kenya’s economic growth in the near future by fostering a culture of saves and investing among the next generation.
