Ministry of Education Releases 2024 Co-Curricular Activities Calendar & Guidelines for Junior Schools
The Ministry of Education has unveiled the co-curricular activities calendar for 2024, with Junior School featuring prominently as a standalone event. This segment falls under the primary school sub-sector, with headteachers of primary schools currently responsible for overseeing the funds allocated for the implementation and coordination of these activities.
Outlined in the 2024 calendar are the various activities Junior Schools will partake in throughout the year. Term I will feature Athletics, Cross Country, Handball, Swimming, and 5×5 Basketball, while Term II will focus on Soccer, Volleyball, 3×3 Basketball, and Netball.

To facilitate this transition smoothly, the existing Kenya Primary School Sports Association Committees will oversee the process. They will work alongside Field Education offices at each level to provide necessary support, including technical officials, referees, and umpires.
In light of these developments, certain regulations are to be adhered to for the effective coordination and management of Junior School Co-Curricular activities in 2024:
Subcounty Directors of Education are tasked with nominating caretaker committee members from the current elected and serving sub county Kenya primary schools sports association committee to oversee activities at the Sub-County level, under the oversight and coordination of SCDE.
Similarly, County Directors of Education will nominate caretaker committee members from the existing County Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association Committee to manage activities at the County level, with oversight and coordination by COE.
At the regional level, the Regional Director of Education will nominate caretaker committee members from the regional Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association Committee to oversee activities, under the oversight and coordination of RDE.

The Director of Field Coordination and Co-Curricular Activities will be responsible for coordinating activities at the National level, in conjunction with the Kenya Primary Schools Sports Association.
In addition, it’s advised that officials be selected separately for each activity, considering that primary and junior activities will be running concurrently in different venues, specifically Nyeri and Machakos.
Junior School Term I games are scheduled for April in Machakos County, Eastern Region, according to the released calendar of events on November 23, 2023.
Furthermore, Regional Directors, County Directors, and Sub-County Directors are urged to ensure the involvement of teachers managing Junior School as officials, such as team managers, coaches, chaperones, and referees, alongside primary and secondary school teachers and officials.
Moving forward, the Ministry will offer guidance on the constitution of committees through elections, based on a junior school co-curricular activities constitution that is currently in progress and set to be operationalized from the 2025 calendar year.
