Migori’s Extra County School, St Peter’s Abwao Secondary Outshines Nyanza Giants in 2023 KCSE Exams

In the recently released 2023 KCSE results, St Peter’s Abwao Secondary, an extra county school from Migori county, outperformed renowned academic giants in the Nyanza region. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu released the results on Monday.

St Peter’s Abwao Secondary has emerged as the surprising star in the region. The school, led by Principal Jacktone Ogolla, set a target mean score of 9.5 for its 194 candidates. Remarkably, the school exceeded expectations, achieving a stellar mean score of 9.746.

Notably, the results showcased consistent excellence, with the lowest grade being B minus for 12 students, and only one student receiving an X grade. The highest-performing student secured an A minus, attracting 34 candidates.

The breakdown of the results revealed 88 candidates with a B plus, and 59 with a B plain. Principal Ogolla emphasized that the school’s consistent performance, though previously overlooked, was not surprising to them. He credited the school’s growth to support from the national government and the Suna West NG_CDF kitty.

The school’s chair, Jude Moroso, attributed their success to the dedication of teaching staff and students, allowing them to complete their syllabus on time and allocate ample time for revision.

Moroso expressed gratitude for the milestone of sending all their students to university, thanking God for the achievement. Looking ahead, the school plans to convene to strategize for this year’s national examinations.

In the broader context of the Nyanza region, St Peter’s Abwao Secondary surpassed Maranda High from Siaya county, which scored a mean score of 9.6.

Following closely were Maseno School from Kisumu county with a mean score of 9.5 and Orero Boys from Homa Bay county with a 9.3 mean score. Kanga National School from Migori achieved a mean score of 9.2, while Kisii School attained an 8.95 mean score.

Reuben Kodiango, the Principal of Kanga High National School, credited their success to the establishment of an integrity club, prayers, and concerted efforts among teachers, pupils, and parents. Kodiango expressed satisfaction with maintaining a mean score above nine.

In a separate development, the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) withheld results from Tarang’anya High School in Kuria West sub-county. This decision is pending a 30-day investigation into reported cases of malpractice.

KNEC informed the school that the results were withheld “pending completion of investigations into the reports of the alleged examination irregularity.”
