Meru University to Resume Classes, VC Odhiambo Reinstated
The Meru University of Science and Technology in Kenya has announced that it will be reinstating its suspended Vice-Chancellor (VC), Professor Romanus Odhiambo, by the end of Tuesday, March 7th.
This decision comes following an order from Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu, who ordered that Professor Odhiambo be returned to his office and that the university be reopened to pave the way for a graduation ceremony scheduled for Saturday, March 11th.
In a statement released by the University’s governing council chairperson, Bosire Mwebi, it was announced that the decision to appoint an acting Vice-Chancellor has been rescinded and that Professor Odhiambo will be returning to his office.
Mwebi also stated that the Council will facilitate Professor Odhiambo’s immediate resumption of office before the close of business on March 7th, 2023.
According to Mwebi, after consultations with the Education Ministry, the university will reopen its gates to students by Wednesday, March 8th, to resume normal operations.
He also urged members of the University Community to “remain calm and to support the University leadership in the discharge of its mandate.”
Professor Odhiambo was sent on terminal leave by the governing council on the grounds that he was not able to meet his expected targets on his delegated duties, and the council had resolved not to renew his contract.
This decision sparked a student riot witnessed on Monday, which led to the indefinite closure of the university.
The graduation ceremony scheduled for March 11th will now proceed as planned, following the decision to reinstate Professor Odhiambo and reopen the university.
