Education stakeholders are advocating for young men to consider beauty courses at Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

Traditionally dominated by women, this field now offers notable opportunities, particularly for self-employment.

During the 4th graduation ceremony at Glamourland Technical and Vocational Training Institute in Embu, speakers highlighted the importance of shifting cultural attitudes.

Manase Nguu, the chairman of the institute’s board, emphasized that many young men remain unemployed, despite beauty courses offering marketable skills.

Underexplored Opportunities in the Beauty Industry

Nguu pointed out that although demand in the beauty industry is increasing, few boys are exploring these opportunities, leaving them untapped by half of the youth population.

He encouraged parents to urge their sons to enroll in beauty therapy, hairdressing, and similar courses, which are proving lucrative, especially for those pursuing self-employment.

Elizabeth Njeri, the institute’s manager, revealed that in an effort to encourage more boys to join beauty courses, the institution is offering a 20% tuition fee discount for male students.

This initiative is designed to challenge the stigma surrounding these courses and boost male enrollment.

Tackling Cultural Biases

Dr. Rahab Gathuci, the event’s chief guest, explained that boys’ low participation in beauty courses stems from ingrained cultural biases that view such careers as feminine.

She stressed the need to dismantle these stereotypes, which prevent boys from entering a rapidly growing industry.

Dr. Robinson Kariuki, principal of St. Andrew Theology College, emphasized that the government must ensure TVET students receive higher education loans to support their studies.

He noted that TVETs are increasingly essential in tackling the youth unemployment crisis by creating skilled workers in emerging sectors like beauty and wellness.

He further echoed the belief that vocational training is a key solution for sustainable development and reducing unemployment among the youth.
