Medic Warn Parents Not To Disregard This Sign Of Cancer In Children.
Stephen Ngigi, the medical director of the Maragua Sub County hospital, has urged parents not to disregard any unusual swelling on their children’s bodies to prevent bone cancer.
Ngigi stated that some swellings if left untreated, could be precursors to bone cancer, which is treatable and manageable if detected early.
“We are accustomed to cancer affecting older individuals, but recently we have seen an increase in the number of cases in young children,” he continued.
If not detected early, the likelihood of cancer spreading to other organs is very high. Ngigi urged parents and guardians not to disregard any odd swelling in youngsters, as bone cancer begins with a potentially ignorable swelling.
In order for cancer treatment to be most effective, physicians advocate early detection.
Ngigi disclosed that a 10-year-old child from Kiambu County had just amputated her leg due to bone cancer while in their care.
According to the girl’s mother, Lydiah Wairimu, Sharon’s leg swelled when she fell while playing with her pals.
“Sharon fell while playing and I thought the swelling would subside on its own but in less than three months it had become a cancerous tumor prompting her right leg to be amputated,” she said tearfully.
Clearly, Sharon’s life has taken an unusual turn, but even as she continues to recover at the subdistrict hospital in Maragua, her ambition to become a physician remains intact.
In the meantime, Sharon’s family has asked well-wishers and people of goodwill to assist her in acquiring a prosthetic leg so she can live a regular life.
Abnormal healing of an injury is a common cause of bone tumours, which typically affect the pelvis or the long bones of the arms and legs.

In bone cancer, abnormal cells proliferate uncontrollably and kill normal bone tissue. Bone cancer can originate in the bone or travel there from other body regions, a process known as metastasis.
The diagnosis of bone cancer requires a medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, PET scans, and bone scans.
