Matiang’i Destroyed Education, Sossion Claims. “He’s Not a Hero”
Wilson Sossion, a former Knut secretary general, has asserted that former Education secretary Fred Matiang’i was lauded for the wrong reasons during his time.
Sossion stated in an interview with Citizen TV that Matiang’i’s actions fostered a culture of devastation in the education sector.
“Matiang’i was glorified while he developed a culture of destruction of our students through his policies,” he said.
Additionally, he asserted that Matiang’i’s regulations were intended to restrict the transition of students to the university.
“We are destroying our students with the grading system,” he said.
Sossion added that the government must have a comprehensive conversation over the purpose of national exams.
“We must discuss and debate the purpose of National exams, we need to know that exams are there to facilitate the transition,” he added. .
Sossion stated that the transition of students into universities remains low, adding that it should resemble the movement of elementary students to secondary schools.
“When we have a reduction of numbers of As from 3,000 to 1,146, really? What is the purpose of exams?” he asked.
“If we do a comparative analysis, Grade C in Kenya is automatically Grade A in Botswana, we are running a very high examination system.”
Since the 2022 KCSE results were released on Friday, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has been trending on Twitter.
The results have been met with varied reactions from Kenyans who believe the exams lacked integrity.
This caused Kenyans to reflect on the time when Matiang’i was the education secretary and the efforts he made to ensure exam transparency.
Some believe it is too soon to evaluate the current CS, Ezekiel Machogu, while others believe Matiang’i set the bar too high for his replacement.
Despite Machogu’s assertions that there was no cheating, the results have raised suspicions as the majority of schools posted unusually high mean marks on the KCSE exams.
Overall, 135,021 students earned a grade of D+, with 70,238 females and 64,789 males receiving the grade.
According to the data, there were 167,758 students with a grade of D-, or 18.99 percent. There were a total of 155,480 students in the D plain category, while 30,822 students attained grade E.
Kenyans went to Twitter with the hashtag #Matiang’i to voice their displeasure with the results and to praise him for what they deemed a competent performance when he was in charge of the education portfolio.
