Mathew Nyamlori: 39-Year-Old Man who sat KCPE 9 times, Graduated But Still Jobless.
A 39-year-old man spent 23 years in primary school, sat nine KCPE attempts and attended three national schools before enrolling in university.
‘It has not been a five-finger exercise acquiring education. In my class, I was greeted with derision and ridicule from classmates for being the oldest,” he says.
Nyamlori took his KCPE exam for the first time in 1998, scoring 478 out of a possible 700 and receiving an admission letter to Kabianga High School, but he was unable to continue due to a lack of fees.
He did well in all nine KCPE attempts but was unable to obtain financial assistance to further his education.
Thanks to Equity Bank’s Wings to Fly scholarship program, which funded his secondary education at Nairobi School, where he completed his KCSE with a B+.

“Although this happened, I had great teachers who guided and mentored me, assuring me that one day I would join university and become a useful member of society.”
He received his bachelor’s degree in public policy and administration from Kenyatta University in July of last year.
However, he, like thousands of other unemployed graduates, has yet to find work eight months later.
He earns a living by conducting research and writing academic proposals, according to the Daily Nation. Nyamlori is now looking forward to expanding his education by studying law.
In October 2021, he lamented that some people had promised him a job but then failed to follow through.
“So many people, both locally and abroad, promised to give me a job and some money to start a business but no one kept their word,” he laments.
“These were ‘emotional pledges’ from people who knew I was world-weary and desperately needed a source of income to support my family and myself.
