Maseno University to Admit its First Cohort of Law (LLB) Students in May

Maseno University has announced that it will admit its first Bachelor of Law (LLB) students in May, following clearance from the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

The university has also received accreditation from the Council for University Education (CUE) to establish a School of Law at its Kisumu City Campus.

The dean of the Law School, Prof. Nicholas Wasonga Orago, said that enrollment is ongoing, and the university hopes to receive National Government placement in September.

According to Prof. Orago, the university council intends to establish the school of law on a foundation of research and regional contemplation. He stressed that research would be one of the core classes taught to the law students.

Prof. Orago noted that the university expects to attract students from neighboring countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The university is particularly looking forward to enrolling students from the East African Community. The entry mean grade requirement for the LLB program is C+ with a minimum of B Plain in English or Kiswahili.

The program will provide the mandatory 42-course units, with four qualified lecturers who are PhD holders set to teach law.

To enhance learning, the university has set up a moot courtroom, a well-stocked law library, a computer laboratory, and several lecture halls.

Prof. Orago emphasized that the university would emphasize legal entrepreneurship as the law is business and practice. The university hopes to train law students to become efficient managers of law firms and institutions.

The law programs the university is set to offer include the 16 core units as per the CLE’s regulations, such as Constitutional law, Criminal law, and Law of Evidence, which will enable law graduates to practice in the country.

Prof. Orago stressed that the university would use mooting as a key tool to teach the students. Students will have the practical experience of being in court and arguing cases. The university will also have comparative learning and student exchange programs with other higher learning institutions offering law.

This will expose students to different modes of learning to help them grow to be broad thinkers in legal practice.
