Magoha Orders Schools In These Areas To Close on Monday
Day schools in Mombasa and Kakamega counties, as well as six other counties with pending elections, will be closed on Monday, August 29 to accommodate the election.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha announced on Tuesday that the institutions will reopen on Tuesday, August 30, following the conclusion of the elections.
“The IEBC has announced elections on 29th and we understand most schools are required as tallying centres.
Tallying centers that may be needed for more than one day should be transferred to tertiary institutions, according to Prof. Magoha.
However, the CS stated that boarding schools will not be closed.
“Children in day schools will remain at home on 29th and report the following day. Boarding schools acting like tallying centres will not be closed,” he stated.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced on Monday that the postponed General Election in various parts of the country will now take place on August 29.
Governorship elections in Mombasa and Kakamega counties were among the eight elections postponed by IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.
The other six are elections for Members of the National Assembly in Kitui Rural Constituency (Kitui County), Kacheliba Constituency (West Pokot County), Pokot South Constituency (West Pokot County), and Rongai Constituency (Kitui County) (Nakuru County).
Elections for Member of County Assembly Wards in Kwa Njenga (Embakasi South Constituency – Nairobi County) and Nyaki West had also been pushed forward by the electoral body (North Imenti Constituency – Meru County).
At the same time, CS Magoha urged all school principals to stop sending students home for school fees in order to prevent them from missing out on the marathon calendar established by the government to make up for time lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
