Magoha Directs Principals Not To Send Away Form Ones From Low-Income Families Due To a Lack Of Fees
According to Education Cabinet Secretary Professor George Magoha, all candidates who took the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examination will receive form one placement in accordance with the government’s 100 percent transition policy.
He directed heads of educational institutions not to send home form one students from low-income families due to a lack of school fees, as this practice violated the policy’s 100 percent transition.
Professor Magoha stated that admitting all candidates to secondary schools is in accordance with Article 53(1)(b) of the Kenya Constitution, which states that every Kenyan child is entitled to free and compulsory basic education.
“Heads of schools should understand and assist students from needy backgrounds. They should be able to provide them with uniform and other basic amenities once a child is admitted instead of sending him or her away.
“It is the government’s policy that every learner, regardless of social background, receives full support to complete form four before enrolling in a tertiary institution,” the Cabinet Secretary stated.
Last week, Magoha urged county and regional officials to use fair criteria when awarding scholarships to students, emphasizing that those who cannot afford to pay for their high school education should be prioritized.
“For the sake of uniformity as one government, as you give away scholarships in their respective jurisdiction, can they select those children who cannot afford,” noted Magoha.
